How Many Baby Bottles Do You Need for a Newborn? A Mum's Guide
If you're expecting your first baby, you've probably found yourself staring at pages of baby bottles online and wondering, "How many of these do I actually need?"
I remember asking myself the exact same question. As mums, we want to be prepared for everything, but we also don't want to spend money on things we'll never use.
The truth is, there isn't one perfect answer because every baby is different. But after speaking with other mums and going through those newborn weeks myself, I can tell you what tends to work best for most families.
The Simple Answer
For most newborns, 8 to 12 bottles is a good number to have.
That might sound like a lot at first, but when you realise newborns can feed every two to three hours around the clock, it starts to make sense.
Having enough bottles means you're not standing at the sink washing them constantly when you're already exhausted from night feeds.
It Depends on How You're Feeding Your Baby
If You're Formula Feeding
f your baby will be exclusively formula-fed, I'd recommend having around 8 to 12 bottles ready.
Newborns feed frequently, and trust me, having a few clean bottles waiting when you're running on very little sleep is a lifesaver.
If You're Breastfeeding
If you're planning to breastfeed and only use bottles occasionally, you can probably start with 4 to 6 bottles.
This gives you enough flexibility if you want to express milk, have your partner help with feeds, or simply enjoy a little break now and then.
If You're Doing Both
Many mums choose a combination of breastfeeding and formula feeding, and in that case, 6 to 8 bottles is usually plenty.

My Biggest Tip: Don't Buy Too Many Too Soon
This is something I wish more people had told me.
It's tempting to buy a huge bottle set before your baby arrives, but babies can be surprisingly picky. Some babies happily drink from any bottle, while others seem to have very strong opinions about the shape, teat, or flow.
I always suggest starting with a few bottles first. Once you know what your baby likes, you can easily buy more.
What Size Bottles Should You Start With?
For newborns, the smaller bottles are usually perfect.
Most babies only drink small amounts during those first weeks, so 90-120ml (3-4oz) bottles are often all you need initially.
As your baby grows, you'll probably move up to larger bottles, but there's no rush. One thing you'll quickly learn as a mum is that babies have a way of growing and changing before you're quite ready for it!

What Worked for Me
If I were shopping for a newborn today, I'd start with:
2-3 bottles of different brands/shapes before baby arrives
A couple of spare teats
A bottle brush
A steriliser or sterilising solution
Then I'd see what baby likes and buy more if needed.
It's much easier to add to your collection than to discover you've spent money on bottles your baby won't use.
The best advice I can give, mum to mum, is this: start simple, see what works for your little one, and don't feel pressured to buy everything at once.Your baby doesn't need a perfect collection of bottles. They just need a happy, loved, and well-rested mum doing her best—and that's already more than enough.
